Benefits of Oil Pulling

Here are some of the best benefits of oil pulling and how to use oil pulling oils in your daily regiment.

What is Oil Pulling?

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic therapy used to enhance detoxification and dental health. Oil pulling oil benefits range from supporting healthy teeth and gums to preventing halitosis (bad breath). The technique of oil pulling involves the use of carrier oils such as coconut oil, sesame seed oil, and sunflower seed oil (or a combination of them you can find here) as “pulling” agents to pull away harmful and unwanted toxins from the throat, gums, teeth, and the mouth.

How to Pull Oil with Oil Pulling Oils?

A general technique of oil pulling involves the placement of the oil pulling oil in the mouth and then swishing the oil pulling oil for 15 minutes.

Note: If you cannot use oil pulling oils for 15 minutes at a time, don’t stress. It’s always difficult in the beginning. Start with 2-3 minutes in the beginning, and build up from there. Studies show that it takes an average of 1-2 months to get into the habit of any new task. Have patience, you will get there.

When you hold the oil pulling oils in your mouth and swish, the small chunks of leftover food particles and the plaque biofilm surrounding the teeth, throat, gums, and mouth are pulled out because the oil pulling oil is able to get in and out of the small crevices between our teeth and pull out molecules that are soluble in fats.

There are two categories of particle solubility— fat soluble and water soluble particles. To get all the particles removed, it is best to rinse your mouth with water and then oil. When the molecule is fat-soluble, the plaque particles will dissolve in substances that also contain fats. Examples of this include oil pulling oils, fatty acids, and lipids, of which many things come from our food intake. The act of spitting out the oil pulling oil, then, allows you to remove these toxins from your mouth.

Cold pressed carrier or base oils are the preferable choice oil pulling oils to use for oil pulling. Examples of such oils include Sesame Seed Oil, Sunflower Seed Oil, and Coconut Oil. The GuruNanda Oil Pulling Oils are Sesame Seed Oil, Sunflower Seed Oil, Coconut Oil, and Peppermint Oil. These specific oil pulling oils, when combined, can balance our Ayurvedic Doshas, allowing our bodies to absorb the necessary antioxidants and (MCT) fatty acids that are beneficial to our teeth and gums.

According to the Brittish Dental Journal, using oil pulling oils are one of the most proactive means of getting rid of bacteria from the teeth and promoting healthy gums and teeth. It is stated that the oil pulling technique may be even more efficient than flossing because oil pulling oils also provide an additional benefit of naturally whitening the teeth. Even though oil pulling is an ancient technique, it is growing in popularity today more than ever before as people are realizing it’s not just a fad, it is a real science that has been studied for thousands of years by ancient yogis and now, also by many prominent peer-reviewed journals.

Once you are done oil pulling, please spit the oil pulling oil out into a trash can and rinse your mouth with fresh, clean water.

A note: Spitting into the sink or toilet may clog your appliances, and so we recommend that you spit the oil pulling oil out into a trash bag or trash can.
