Your Essential Guide to Using Essential Oils Safely

Some time ago, it was thought that essential oils could only be used safely if applied topically. However, as research continues to develop, we began to understand that there is a variety of application methods, including aromatic and topical ones.

Aromatic

Through inhalation of various essential oils, we can be affected on various levels, including mental, physiological, and emotional levels. Therefore, aromatic application can have a powerful effect on the body.

Aromatic Applications:

Topical method is another effective method of application because essential oils have low molecular weights, which speeds up the rate of absorption. Moreover, they are also lipid soluble, making it easier for them to penetrate the skin.

Topical Applications: 

  • The essential oils or a mixture of oils are diluted with carrier oil, such as fractionated coconut oil and massaged into the skin
  • The oil(s) are added to a warm bath – a few drops would do
  • A hot or cold compress is made by using the oil. A towel is soaked in water, essential oils are added to it, and then the towel is applied to the desired area
  • The oil is used as a lotion or moisturizer

Skin discomfort/Irritation

Always start by performing a patch test when using an essential oil for the first time. The idea is to apply the oil to a small area of the body. Wait for a few minutes to see if it causes any irritation. If it doesn’t, continue application. If it causes the skin to break out in a rash, then wipe the oil off and apply some carrier oil on the affected area. If the discomfort continues, then seek medical attention.

Sensitive Areas

The following areas are considered sensitive, so it is better to avoid applying essential oils there:

  • Inside the eyes
  • Inside the ears
  • Genitals
  • Mucous membranes

Frequency and Quantity

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts. Therefore, always start with low amounts and go slow. One to two drops are adequate in most cases.

Pregnancy and Lactation

It is advised that pregnant and lactating women not use essential oils without the advice of their doctors.

Sun Exposure

Certain essential oils, for instance citrus oils, might react with sunlight when exposed to the sun, resulting in a sensitivity reaction. Read the label and do your research when applying a n essential oil for the first time. If you know that exposure to sun can cause a reaction, then do not go in the sun for at least 12–48 hours after applying the oil.
